After The Storm

by Leslie Dianne

After the storm
expect butterflies
gasping for atmosphere
and tiny gnats annoying with their
persistence to survive
a weed peeks out from the concrete
and begs
the boot
to stomp
elsewhere

a single leaf
plummets from the branch that is
too long, too strong
for the city street

snowflakes can dazzle
rain can rip open the heart
because the memory of rivers
is strong
and everyone arrives
sooner or later
crawling, climbing, dancing
out of the water
out from the storm
