There was Love here once

by Daniel Gonk

There was Love here once
There was love here once.
When flowers and ferns hung from walls
That were covered with old movie posters.
Beauty products and skin cream overflowed the top of the sink
While men’s deodorant and a razor was cramped in a small corner.
Rugs from faraway lands covered his once barren floors.
Fine wines were opened every Thursday.
They drank in bed after dinner
The sheet still had the red stain from their first date.
Dinner for two was prepared with care every Friday
Conversations of making meals for three were had regularly.

There was love here once.
Stuffed animals and action figures littered the floor
Like fallen leaves of late autumn.
The rugs were stained
With milk and juice.
Laughter rolled through the halls
As bedtime stories were told
And shadow puppets were made.
Plans for a tree house were drawn and put on the fridge
Mac and cheese was served most nights.
Dreams of the prosperous life a child could lead
And what an amazing life two people could share
Filled the rooms with positivity.

There was love here once.
When the keys of a laptop were tapped
To the rhythm of his own meandering thoughts
And his full heart.
Dreams of
A best-selling novel
A beautiful family
And a happy life
Were all had here once.
Now the frequent key tapping has been replaced
By the slow scratching of a pen.
Wine for two has become
Whiskey for one.
The toys are in the attic
Their floor space replaced by
Empty bottles, garbage,
And broken picture frames.
There aren’t stains on the new rug
Because tears are clear.
There was love her once
But now there is just a man.
