Surgery

by Andrew Schmiege

Surgery
The terminal mechanic looked
up at the hospital
in resignation
as he meandered through the courtyard.
He had replaced it all:
engines, transmissions, electrical,
body work, tires, interiors.

Looking down at his hands
the oil stained fingerprints told
an elegant poem of his life.
He could fix anything
but he couldn’t be fixed.
